The Snow (Elgar)

PREAMBLE

Edward Elgar composed "The Snow" around 1890, setting a poem by his wife, Alice Elgar, to a vivid, SSA choral piece for two violins, and piano. The poetry uses contrast (i.e. “sinks so light” and “thy soft grave”) to create a sense of struggle with purpose. We can certainly relate to the cold, darkness of our Christmas season in the North, and the propensity for inward reflection and growth as we journey deeper into the night.
